4th United States Artillery, Battery D

Third Division, X Corps, Army of the James

Note: The “old” Third Division, X Corps, Army of the James had been combined with the “old” Second Division, X Corps, Army of the James, all under Adelbert Ames, and sent along with William F. “Baldy” Smith’s XVIII Corps, AotJ when it went to reinforce the Army of the Potomac at Cold Harbor.  When the combined unit under Adelbert Ames returned to the Bermuda Hundred and Petersburg area, it was the division directly above this one.  A “new” Third Division made up of Ohio National Guard Troops was created just after the First Offensive ended on June 19, 1864. For the entire first offensive, a lone artillery unit which had stayed behind was the only entity still part of this division.
