Captain Almont Barnes, 1st NY Light Artillery, Battery C, was my great grandfather and I am writing a book about him. If any readers have information on Capt. Barnes and/or his battery that you would like to share, please contact me. Barnes commanded Battery C through the first 3 years of the war. He left the army in August 1864 following the Battle of Weldon Railroad. The battery was reorganized under the command of Lieutenant, later Captain, David F. Ritchie. Over the winter of 1864-1865 the battery received 4 new guns, “light twelves”, replacing the 4 rifled guns, known as ordnance, that they had previously. Capt. Ritchie led Battery C at the Siege of Petersburg, the Assault on Petersburg, and the March to Appomattox.
Mr. Andrews,
Thanks for commenting! I hope you don’t mind, but I moved your comment to the main page for the unit you are interested in. I’ll be contacting you privately to see if you might be able to help me fill out the information on this page with information backed by sources you have found. In return, I’d be happy to publicize your book here and at TOCWOC – A Civil War Blog, my other Civil War site.
