OR XL P1 (Broadfoot Sup.) #28: Excerpt from the Journal of Major General Bushrod R. Johnson, commanding Johnson/DNCSV, June 13-July 30, 18641
SOPO Editor’s Note: The Broadfoot Supplement to the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies is rare and not sold in single volumes. As a courtesy to researchers, I’m making available summaries of the reports contained in this set relevant to the Siege of Petersburg.
Summary: This nine-page journal extract comes from Major General Bushrod Rust Johnson, commanding a division in Beauregard’s Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia. His division spent the time covered in this journal extract defending the eastern approaches to Petersburg along with Hoke’s Division of the same department. There is a lot of good information on the activities of Johnson’s Division from the Second Battle of Petersburg to the Battle of the Crater. Johnson is detailed even on the days when the major fights were not occurring, something which you don’t always find in a lengthy campaign like this one. This really should be published online for everyone to access. If you have a copy of Johnson’s Journal from the National Archives and you would be willing to share, please CONTACT US.

Available Online?: No, but I do have an unpublished report of Bushrod Johnson for June 16-18, 1864 at the Second Battle of Petersburg.
