The Cape Ann Light and Gloucester Telegraph (Gloucester, MA) printed quite a few good letters from Massachusetts soldiers during the Civil War. Author and NPS Historian John Hennessy sent me quite a few of these letters several years ago and I hunted down the rest. The result is a lens into the Siege of Petersburg from Massachusetts soldiers serving in the 23rd Massachusetts, 32nd Massachusetts, 59th Massachusetts, and others. Two of these men writing into the paper even got into, and apparently out of, a feud about their experiences as soldiers! Read along below and follow the trials and tribulations, the successes and triumphs, of these Massachusetts men in late war Virginia.
