Gordon’s (later Evans’) Division, Second Corps, Army of Northern Virginia¹

August 21, 1864

The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia produced inspection reports at approximately monthly intervals late in the Civil War.  Luckily, many of these reports have been preserved and are available on microfilm from the National Archives and Records Association. Commander: Major General John B. Gordon (But Gordon did not command his division at Petersburg. He was the Second Corps commander throughout the Second Corps’ time at Petersburg.)

Inspection Location: Bunker Hill, Virginia in the Shenandoah Valley

Aggregate Effective for the Field: 2,591

Officers and Men Present for Duty (PFD): 2,823

Weapons: Mostly Enfield Rifles, some Smoothbore Muskets in York’s Command

Sub-Units:

• York’s Brigade, Brigadier General Zebulon York, 614 officers and men PFD
• Terry’s Brigade, Brigadier General William Terry, 858 officers and men PFD
• Evans’ Brigade, Colonel Edmund N. Atkinson (of the 26th GA), 1,344 officers and men PFD
