On July 30, I posted a short entry on the 147th anniversary of the Battle of the Crater during the Siege of Petersburg. At the time I did not see two interesting blog entries on the Crater, one at Brooks Simpson’s Crossroads blog, and the other at the Encyclopedia Virginia’s blog. Brooks’ post asks readers who they blame, and Brooks himself takes the position that Ulysses S. Grant, rather than the usual suspects, is ultimately responsible. Much discussion has ensued since. Meanwhile, the Encyclopedia Virginia’s blog offers up an eyewitness account of the battle and also the thoughts of Ta-Nehisi Coates at The Atlantic on the Civil War.
