HOPEWELL – This Memorial Day weekend, General Grant and his wife Julia will welcome guests to the area of Grant’s Headquarters at City Point, present day Hopewell.
On Saturday and Sunday, General Grant will discuss his experiences leading the entire Union Army while headquartered at City Point. Saturday’s highlight will include General Grant providing some insight into one of his most famous victories; The Vicksburg Campaign. “Espionage During the Civil War” will be a featured presentation on Sunday.
Julia Grant will provide a woman’s perspective as she presents a program titled, “Fashions of the 1860s: Hoop Skirt to the Bustle.”
Visitors will have an opportunity to get to know General and Mrs. Grant personally as they talk about their life together from the time they met, to war time, and post war.
Portraying General Grant and Mrs. Grant are nationally known living historians Larry and Constance Clowers. The Clowers have been portraying the Grants for several years and were recent guests at the Pentagon. Constance Clowers is a master seamstress who combines her love of history and her knowledge of clothing to present an accurate depiction of Civil War era fashions. The couple use a combination of entertainment and education to motivate and fascinate.1
