I found an interesting review of Earl J. Hess’ book In the Trenches at Petersburg: Field Fortifications and Confederate Defeat by Charles H. Bowery at H-Net.com today. In addition to lauding Hess’ main focus of field entrenchments and the men assigned to design and build them, Bowery is very impressed with Hess’ campaign summary as well, stating that “Even without the incredibly detailed analysis of field fortifications, they would stand alone as campaign history.” I heartily agree with Bowery about Hess’ writing ability. I encourage you to check out all three books in his “Field Fortifications” trilogy, all published by the University of North Carolina Press.
