Unit: 5th New York Cavalry
Unit Affiliation: (1), 3, Cavalry
Title: The Fifth New York Cavalry in the Civil War
Author: Vincent L. Burns
BTC’s Take: A pretty standard modern regimental history from McFarland. The only real Petersburg action for the 5th New York Cavalry was the Wilson-Kautz Raid from June 21-July 1, 1864. Burns uses quite a few good primary sources, but uses the continued odd term “Official Record”, singular, to refer to the Official Records, and made at least one glaring factual error for the Battle of Cedar Creek, indicating John B. “Hood” was there rather than John B. Gordon. Overall, the 5th New York Cavalry’s story is fairly well told, but the book could have used many, many more maps.
