Note: The King William Artillery was decimated at Spotsylvania Courthouse on May 12, 1864 in the Mule Shoe Salient. Some of its remaining men joined the Orange Artillery, others filled positions as needed in Cutshaw’s Artillery Battalion, and still others formed a unit of supernumerary men of the Orange, King William, and Morris Artillery batteries. They were armed with carbines and mounted to support Cutshaw’s Artillery Battalion. This page is present here to provide information on this unit, which by the time of the Siege of Petersburg had ceased to exist as an independent command. Some orders of battle list this unit as present, which while technically correct can be extremely confusing.
