    Brett:
Can you explain the meaning of the title on the spreadsheet I bought?
It is titled “Infantry Ordnance Returns (etc.)”
Does this reflect the weapons “returned” or “on hand” or what?
Appreciate any clarifying info you can give me.

    Bob,

A “return” is simply a report filed to count something, in this case the number of weapons on hand in a given company of a given regiment on June 30, 1864. So the numbers you see for the specific companies in each New Jersey regiment show the number and type of weapons they had available to use on June 30, 1864.

    Thanks much Brett.
As I delve deeper you will hear more from me.
I am anxiously awaiting my great grand dad’s military record with hopes of new info on his military service.
At the very least I’m hoping for his complete unit record at his death, down to the company at least.

    We’ll see.

    Bob,

I wish you the best in your search. I set up this massive project because I never want to run out of things to search for, and I suspect the Petersburg Campaign will keep me busy for a long time to come.

    Brett:
I am looking for anything I can get on the “before” Petersburg actions from June 15th thru 18th, 1864.
I have ordered three books used by Trudeau in his “The Last Citadel” as research on these days actions.
“PGT Beauregard” by W. T. Harry, “Battles and Leaders Vol 4”, and “Wasted Valor” by Thomas Howe, all in an effort to isolate my relative’s unit on the day he died which was June 17, 1864 according to NJ State Military records.

    Thanks for responding.
