Confederate Inspection Reports
UPDATE: The original images of the microfilm for the following rolls are freely available on the Internet Archive, as follows:
The Confederate Inspection Reports come from NARA Microfilm M935: Inspection Reports and Related Records Received By the Inspector Branch in the Confederate Adjutant and Inspector General’s Office, Rolls 10-15. These rolls may be purchased directly from the NARA for $85 (microfilm) or $125 (images on CD) per roll. I’ll be offering transcriptions of these free of charge soon. What a wonderful thing for you to be doing! Thank you so much! Will there be reports for the Cavalry as well?
Virginia,
You’re very welcome. Yes, cavalry inspection reports should be included. I’m blanking at the moment whether there are any. The National Archives M935 microfilm series contains all of the Army of Northern Virginia’s inspection reports for 1864-65 in rolls 10-15. As of this writing, I have roll 10 and I’m purchasing roll 11 soon.
Brett
I have transcribed the inspection reports for G. T. Anderson’s Brigade, Field’s Division, and Longstreet’s Corps. The August through December 1864 reports are fairly easily read and transcription nearly complete, but the January and February 1865 are an entirely different story. They are faded and extremely difficult to read. There are parts, particular on pages 5,6, 8, 9, 10, and 11. If interested in these, please contact me at my e-mail address.
Getting these out to the public is a great idea and will significantly help historians understand the state of these units during this period.
Henry,
I am very interested in these. And I’ll be happy to offer these particular items to the public free on my site. However, my wife is in the hospital on bed rest with our third child. He is expected to show up in about a week. After that, I’ll try to reach out. If you still have my email address feel free to reach out that way. I will be in touch, hopefully in early July.
Brett
wondering if you might have reports for Rodes or Ramsuers division prior to the battle of 3rd Winchester ?
TJ,
Thanks for the comment. I’m not sure. My focus has been solely on looking for those inspection reports which happened at the Siege of Petersburg. I’ll see what I have when I get home, but I definitely dont have transcriptions done.
Brett
